A personalized education program is often referred to as an IEP. This is a legal document for students with special needs. IEP is usually twenty to forty pages or even longer. The IEP contains a lot of important information. Knowing what you're looking for in advance will help you better determine the accuracy and potential effectiveness of your documents. The IEP has three main components; assessment and student needs, goals and objectives to meet those needs, and service delivery and support services to meet goals and objectives.
Complete formal and/or informal assessments and prepare data for each IEP meeting. These data are used to help the team assess the age and grade level of your child compared to other children. This information is used to create a list of educational needs for your child. Your child may only be in one area [such as a lecture or many areas] depending on their education and disability.
After the team's annual goals have identified the needs, we have created specific, measurable goals that outline your child's level of mastery before the end of the IEP. The IEP goal is based on core content standards that apply to all children in public schools. The IEP goal should describe the specific skills within the goals to be achieved, how to measure progress, and the level of progress your child can expect and/or consider acceptable.
The final part of the IEP lists who will provide services for your child and how often. This will include whether the service offering will take place in the general education environment, the special education environment or the therapist's office. If you need any of these files, you can also find information about the behavioral plan or communication plan. This section covers all accommodation and modifications your child needs to receive education benefits both inside and outside the general education environment. In addition, information about regional, state, and federal testing will be provided.
As you can see, the IEP is a complex legal document that is a binding agreement between you and the school district. The format of the IEP is based on state and federal laws. You must understand what the IEP should include in order for your child to get the help he or she needs to get as much educational benefits as possible.
