The decision to buy a road bike or a mountain bike depends on your comfort and what you think you will do the most. When I decided to ride a bike, my friends in the office were hardcore mountain bikers, and they really made it sound interesting. Therefore, according to their guidance, my first bike was a mountain bike. Today, however, I am an avid passer-by and can see myself staying on the road for a long time.
My experience with mountain bikes is very similar to my first skiing with college friends. They all like it and hope that I will try and, under their guidance, our first ski trip.
