Eating disorders and co-occurring psychological disorders are common and must be treated at the same time in most cases. Whenever there is a life-threatening behavior, it must be resolved immediately and then explore secondary issues. When suffering from a person with eating disorders for a long time, the primary disease may be depression of anxiety. Eating disorders become a mechanism for dealing with primary psychological disorders. People may have multiple mental illnesses and will also struggle with eating disorders. Eating disorders are sometimes fatal diseases and are not always accompanied by common diseases; diagnosis is important.
People with eating disorders may also be addicted to drugs or alcohol, shopping, sex, or anything that helps them cope with what they think is out of control. The more addictive behaviors force them to try to control eating disorders. This presents a loop that often gets out of hand until the life change event occurs and someone is involved. Just because patients face major consequences or face their behavior does not mean they will change.
Excessively strong, often hidden emotions that drive someone to suffer from eating disorders and joint psychological disorders must be allowed to surface. This can be terrible because it feels lost control. Eating disorders therapists, many of whom eat normally and successfully suffer from mental illness, are the best candidates to help with this process.
