Mountain Bike - Early History

Mountain bikes are designed for off-road activities. This means they need a more robust construction to handle dirt marks and other unpaved surfaces. Jumping, steep slopes, rock surfaces and scouring are just some of the rougher conditions in which they are designed. With these circumstances in mind, standard bicycles will not be created.

Mountain bikes can be abbreviated as MTB. Another term used is ATB. This represents an all-terrain bicycle.

The history of these more professional bicycles is of course intertwined with the standard bicycle history. The first reliable account dates back to the early 19th century. Earlier and less reliable events have been noticed before, but they are notorious.

In August 1896, a bicycle was specially recorded for off-road purposes. This was during the Buffalo soldiers' expedition. They traveled from Missoula, Montana, to Yellowstone Park and returned.
