It is now the third most common form of physical injury after arthritis and heart disease, and hearing loss affects nearly 50 million Americans. This accounts for about 20% of the US population or one in every five people. Although in some cases it causes congenital problems, most people gradually lose their hearing as they get older. According to the National Institutes of Health [NIH], 47% of adults aged 75 and older have hearing impairment. The good news is that this situation can usually be managed with a hearing aid.

Digital devices are more versatile than analog versions, and can convert, amplify, and transmit sound waves from digital codes to the ear. Because the numeric code contains information about loudness, direction, and pitch, it's easier to adjust them to the user's needs. As you might expect, these complex aids are usually more expensive than the basic model. But like everything else, you get the price you pay. All patients with moderate to severe hearing loss should strongly consider the digital simulation version.

Hearing aids are the most effective way to treat long-term hearing impairment in most patients.
