ESL Teacher Textbook Review - Oxford Picture Dictionary

If you are an English as a Second Language [ESL] teacher and are looking for a final textbook to teach your student vocabulary, then you will like the Oxford Picture Dictionary [monolingual English]. This textbook is suitable for any ESL student and any ESL teacher. It can be used by students at all levels and contains important English words or vocabulary. We use this book at our ESL school, the Hawaii Literacy Center, because it can be used with students of any level. As long as students have learned the basics of their basic ABC and English reading, they can learn it effectively.

To understand the amazing adaptability of this ESL textbook, I will discuss how to use it in our school. Drop-In Center is a free ESL school in Hawaii's local immigrant community because of inconsistent student attendance. Students are free to enter and exit, and then it is difficult to have a traditional curriculum plan structure. In addition, because schools are primarily managed by volunteers, there are usually not enough ESL teachers to divide students into different levels.

The Oxford Picture Dictionary offers us many advantages:

1] It provides vocabulary for students of all levels [you can view the catalog on Amazon.com].
from

2] Students and ESL teachers can start on any page at any time [so freshmen won't feel they are not in class].
from

3] Even if the student's English level is very low, the picture can be understood.
from

4] Students at all levels consider this book useful and engaging.
from

5] The teacher's manual and workbook are very good, making teaching and learning easier.
from

6] Most students are very cheap [about $17]

Of course, even with so many advantages, this book is also a reference book... a picture dictionary. Therefore, in order to make students interested, ESL teachers need to integrate them into an effective classroom experience.

For my course, I usually use the instructor's manual, which has prepared sample conversations, dictated sentence lists, discussion questions, related vocabulary and other suggested activities. I might take one or two quizzes to help students check their understanding.
