Anorexia is the only mental illness that really feels good. For those of us who have no eating disorders, this may sound strange, but it is.
What do I mean, "Is it good?" There are many ways to improve eating disorders.
1] from
It makes your child feel special and powerful
2] from
It caught her attention, but it was not the main motivation
3] from
It gives her a sense of control over her body.
4] from
She likes the feeling of emptiness
Because anorexia is good for her in these areas, she can hardly admit that this is a problem. She won't give up without fighting because it meets her so many needs.
Think about it like this: from
Suppose your doctor tells you that your feet are gangrenous and it must fall off. However, it looks good to you. It moves in the way it should, it doesn't look discolored, and your feet won't get hurt. Your doctor insists that if she doesn't remove it, it will kill you, but you can't see it.
Those who love you can also see it, who they will trust; are you still a doctor? Of course, they will believe the doctor's opinion. If everyone can see your infected foot, your eyesight or your ability to feel pain is problematic.
They won't wait until you start to see them more clearly. Then you may be dead! They allow doctors to do what is necessary to save lives.
This is also true when your child has an eating disorder. You can't wait until she sees her suffering from eating disorders. Part of the reason for separating her from ED is that you must understand that she can't make healthy decisions for herself right now.
Before she is ready, you must fight for her eating disorders. As her weight recovers, she demonstrates her ability to make the right decisions and you will gradually give back those choices to her. If you wait until the eating disorder signal is so severe that she wants to do something about it, it may be too late.
