Some facts and information about the Cathedral of San Sebastian in Bacolod

Located in front of the public square of Bacolod City is the Cathedral of San Sebastian. The church was founded on April 27, 1876 by Bishop Mariano Cuartero. It is one of the oldest churches in Negros, and it has ended the test of time. The Baroque cathedral and coral stone walls and interior design frames are an architectural marvel. The vestibule of the church provides a spacious entrance that can accommodate hundreds of people every day to the public and religious advocates who flock to special religious occasions such as Lent and Christmas. After entering, you can feel the deep sense of tranquility and spiritual enlightenment, which radiates from its mellow atmosphere. Congregation seats include wooden benches, and worshippers can sit and pray comfortably. Its altar contains intricately decorated chairs and tables.

On the side of the church, candles and various religious artifacts such as rosary and Novena prayer books are sold for religious believers. The church audience usually buys candles and prays to the saint statues on the side of the church, and uses metal doors to guard opportunistic thieves. The saints are dressed in colorful embroidered clothes. The most popular religious statue in the church is the statue of the Virgin Mary with black baby Jesus. Legend When you pray to the black Mary, your prayers are likely to get a response. The candle is usually ignited, and after the prayer, the padlock is struck three times by the metal door. Some also offer flowers and donations, followed by three padlocks.

One of the biggest controversies facing the parish is the issue related to the implementation of the Reproductive Health Act [RH Bill]. The church resolutely opposed the bill from the beginning. Large-scale practices always include their strong protest against the immoral and despicable intentions of the RH Act. They also released a campaign poster against politicians who voted for the implementation of the bill and named them the "team escort" [death team] on the front of the church. They also produced another poster and listed the members of the Senate who voted against the bill and named it "Buhay Team" [life team]. This has caused national news and has been a concern of COMELEC officials who have been monitoring the progress of the May 2013 elections.
