Most of the low back pain and sciatica that the general population suffers are non-specific [' in nature, as long as they know what to do, they can be solved by the suffering individual.
However, there are some rare events that may cause pain for another reason, some of which we call red flags. However, if you feel that you are aware of any signs and symptoms, it is rare that you must first look at a health professional for a thorough assessment.
The rest of this article will focus on the red flag you must be aware of if you suffer from low back pain and/or sciatica.
red flag
I] Cauda Equina Syndrome [CES]
At the level of the first/second lumbar vertebrae, the spinal cord itself is completed and the nerves form a group called the Equda Equina, which is the tail of a horse, which is called similar. If the nerves in this area are subjected to any compression, usually a prolapsed intervertebral disc, these nerves are not allowed to function properly. Typical signs and symptoms are as follows:
a] reduce bladder and bowel control
Lack of control over the bladder and/or intestines. This difficulty is encountered in emptying the bladder or intestines, or it is difficult to prevent yourself from emptying the bladder/intestines.
b] Saddle feels abnormal [numb and/or acupuncture ']
This refers to the numbness or acupuncture between the saddle area, the leg, the genitals, the inner thighs or the buttocks.
c] sexual dysfunction
This may be in the form of impotence or ejaculation/ orgasm.
If you feel you may have CES, seek medical advice immediately. Contact your family doctor immediately and tell them about your symptoms and signs and wait for their next step. If for some reason you are unable to contact your GP, please visit your local Accident and Emergency Department [A&E].
Importantly, I also point out here that pain and subsequent medications can also bring similar signs and symptoms to CES. Therefore, if you do recognize any of the above symptoms and signs, it may be because of the pain or medication you are taking, not because you have CES.
II] Unexplained weight loss
If you lose a lot of weight and can't explain why, you need to visit your family doctor so they can understand this in more detail. Although rare, any unexplained cause of weight loss may be the cause of your back pain and/or sciatica.
three] Fever and sweating at night
If you think you have a long-term fever and/or night sweats, I suggest you check with your family doctor.
IV] History of cancer
Just because you have a history of cancer doesn't mean it's related to your current low back pain and/or sciatica. However, it's a good idea to check with your GP / Health Professional to check the current situation to make sure there is no relationship between the two.
v] Progressive neurological deficit
In this way, I usually mean stitching, numbness and/or weakness. If you have any of these symptoms and signs and feel that the condition is getting worse, it is best to see your GP/Health Professional.
As I mentioned at the beginning of this article, Red Flags are very rare. However, if you have low back pain and/or sciatica, it is important to understand them and the related signs and symptoms.
Although rare, if you do recognize any of the above red flags, you will need to look at your general practitioner. The only real medical emergency mentioned above is CES, you need to visit your GP or your local emergency room as soon as possible.
I hope you enjoy reading the red flag. I know this is not a topic that can help you solve the pain, but if you or anyone you know suffers from low back pain or sciatica, this is a very important message you should be familiar with.
