Kiev history

Legend has it that there are three brothers' families named Kiy, Schek and Khoryv, and one sister, Lybid. Kiy rules a powerful Slavic tribe and is looking for a place to relocate his home to his people. When they came to the beautiful hills of the Dnieper River and saw the beautiful panorama of the Blue River and the seven hills full of chestnut trees, they liked the place very much and decided to settle there. They built a city and named it Kiev more than 1,500 years ago to commemorate their older brother Kiy. Prince Kiel lived on a hill with his family. Shek settled on another hill with a Schekavitsa, and Khoryv settled on the third hill, called Khorevitsa.

Since 882, Kiev has become the capital of the ancient strong state, known as Kievan Rus. In 998, the Kiev prince Vladimir introduced Christianity in Kiev on the Dnieper River by baptizing the population of Kiev. In 1240, the city was destroyed by the monks who invaded Kievan Rus, and later rebuilt. Since 1362, the main parts of Kiev and Ukraine belonged to Lithuania and Poland, and in 1654 became part of the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union.

In 1991, the Ukrainian people voted for Ukrainian independence and Kiev became the capital. Since then, it has become the center of Ukrainian political, economic and cultural life.

In November 2004, Kiev became the center of the Orange Revolution. Thousands of Ukrainian people protested the election tampering on the streets and subsequently elected another ruling party and the Ukrainian president.
