When people ask me about my business, I tell them that I am learning business - we help organizations, teams and individuals to realize their potential through learning. This is a good statement, it does describe the breadth of what we do, but it often leads to follow-up questions, such as. . . "Do you do personal development or just do business skills training?"
My answer is yes.
Because I don't believe there is a significant difference between personal development and career development.
Why do I say that?
What is the reason?
Since my point of view may be different from yours, or you never thought about it, then it makes sense to explain it. There are at least five main reasons why I think personal and professional development is one thing.
Learning is learning. from
We have an amazing potential for learning at birth. Most of us have not fully utilized this potential. Just like we use a jet engine to mow the lawn. Of course the jet engine has enough horsepower to turn the blades, but it has little potential and is not being used. As we learn, we are improving our ability to learn more because we are learning and exercising our "learning muscles". In other words, whenever we learn, we are improving our learning ability.
All experience counts. from
An effective way we learn is to connect new learning with what we know. As we continue to build our knowledge and experience, it enables us to build new connections faster. In other words, the more we learn, the more successful we are in learning new things and in most cases; the faster we can understand through deeper understanding.
We are a complete package. from
It's not like we go to work, not using anything we know in our personal lives to improve professional efficiency. Although we may not need to know how to repair rotary drum equipment at home - these skills may help you diagnose problems with the washing machine. Even if you don't have to back up your system database at home, you can better handle your home PC because you have learned something at work. Although you want you to never need to follow a new customer service program at home, the program may teach you something to follow the process, or know more when you are a customer.
Most importantly, we are complete humans, so we bring our entire work knowledge home and bring all our personal knowledge and experience to work. Therefore, any form of growth or development will benefit you personally and professionally.
The most important skills are always the most important. from
As a better listener to help you - at home or at work? Of course, both have it. Does it make you a better parent when you learn how to coach more effectively at work? Definitely!
We can list these valuable skills, from communication to dealing with conflicts, learning how to learn, providing better feedback, and making yourself more creative... you understand [and may think of the other five An example] now]. We can learn "self-improvement" through many skills, which will help our work and vice versa. So why mark it as one?
Unexpected rules. from
Because our learning grows on the basis of connections, you never know when you will learn to give you a "work" when you explore what the channel has learned, or to study the insights that leaders share at work can help you solve your home. Tricky problem. Similarly, all development, all learning, and all growth contribute to all aspects of our lives.
But wait
Does this mean that when I become a better weaver or pitcher, I will be more productive and successful at work? Yes, due to the reasons I described above [and some other reasons].
This does not mean that your organization should send everyone to a knitting class or bowling class, but it does mean that regardless of the content, there is a great advantage in supporting any form of learning.
Finally, my goal is to help you see all the skills more broadly in your application - instead of classifying something as "personal development," so they don't matter at work.
Learning is learning. personal development Yes Professional development.
When you are no longer worried about these differences, but when considering the application, you will be better served for yourself and others.
