Empiricism defines reality as "what can be proved." The problem with this definition is that it itself leads to nihilism. If the reality is provable, then if something cannot be proved to be a person, it is not true. There is not much evidence to prove that people with brain damage or those who think the earth is flat. Logically, this leads to the conclusion that nothing is true.
I experienced a nihilistic stage when I was a teenager. Some people think that I am taking drugs, others think that I have escaped reality. The real reason is this perception.
Correct the conclusion of nihilism by better defining reality. This definition places the cart in front of the horse. Prove that there is no reality; a proof of the existence of reality. There is no reality in the method of considering it. The reality itself exists and there is a way to identify it.
Although there is not much support for nihilism itself, it can be a useful way to enter other learning systems. There are many spiritual disciples who claim that the real world is God's, or higher consciousness, or perfect form. There are many things that can be learned from these spiritual disciples who have practiced for centuries to strengthen wisdom and understanding. The drawback of many of these systems is that when they are placed on their own devices, they begin to hamper scientific facts and the "world"; this is not the right path.
I want to see people gaining the benefits of science and spirituality. Both the physical world and the spiritual world should be at their best. People have material and spiritual existence; and deprive them of making them poor.
The real reason for the conflict between materialism and spiritual worldview is that they describe two different things. When a blind person holds the elephant's torso and the other's tail, they think they describe two different things; yet they both describe different aspects of the same reality. People are "rational animals" or "social animals", and the human spirit is human. They are just different aspects of human beings.
What is reality? The reality is there. This is a material and spiritual situation. Any true learning system must be consistent with scientific knowledge, while also taking into account all the spiritual experiences that people have, without treating them as mental illness or worse. Spiritual orientation must recognize scientific facts, and material incarnation must recognize spiritual phenomena. Then people will be able to get the benefits of both methods without killing each other.
