High school football - basic knowledge and something to do and not to do

First of all, this is just my opinion, but here are some of the basics I tried to follow as a high school football official:

Player safety from

 - I think the most important thing. Always pay attention to the safety of the player:

  • Crop

  • Illegal block - cut block, rear block, etc.

  • Mask/pull the helmet opening/or chin strap - wear the helmet twist

  • Unnecessarily rough - yes, this is football - but unnecessary blows to players who are completely away from the game or who are intentionally hurt need to be controlled

Slow down the game from

 - Make sure you see your call. It is best to answer the call instead of rushing.

Location, location, location from

 - Coaches and fans hate to call 30 yards away from the game; and you know what it is - good officials too. In the right place, you can call or watch the game. This is easier said to do and requires practice and good on-site mechanics. Know where you are - and there.

Communication from
