High Arch - Problems and Solutions

What is a high arch?

The arch is the area between the football [bottom of the toe] and the heel. In a normal arch, there is a gap between the ground and the foot at the middle portion of the inner portion of the foot [the side of the big toe]. This is called your arch. When this gap is larger than the average space, it is said that you have a high arch. The medical name for the high arch is pes cavus.

Many people with high bows will roll slightly when standing on their ankles. This causes the legs to appear bow-legged and may cause stress on other parts of the body due to changes in walking style.

What is the problem associated with the high arch?

You may find pain in your arch, heel pain, foot pain, knee pain, and even low back pain. A foot with a high arch generally does not absorb shock properly, which can cause any problems in these areas. Some high archers have never developed these problems, but many people do.

There is a thick band of fiber from your heel bone to your forefoot, called the plantar fascia. High arched feet, when you step, it can be tense, and you can experience a lot of pain through the arch and heel. This usually happens in the morning when you step down and stretch the plantar fascia. For high arches, the fascia usually tightens too much, especially overnight.

People with high bows are more susceptible to sprained ankles and may also produce corn and calluses. When their feet hit the ground, they usually increase the risk of pressure fractures due to poor cushioning.

How do I know if I have a high arch?

For a simple test, see if you have a high arch and step on a dry surface with a wet foot. If the line connecting the heel to the foot area is the same width as the rest of the foot, it is likely that the foot is flat. If the line is half of the area, your arch is in the normal range. If the line is very thin, mainly on the outside of the foot [or the ball in the foot area is not connected at all], then you have a very high arc.

If you think you have a high arch that causes pain or problems, consult your doctor, pedorthist, podiatrist or other foot professional for evaluation.

What should I do about Gao Gong?

If your feet feel pain and think it may be due to a high position, please see a doctor. They may have an arch support [orthopaedic insole] on your shoes. For high bows, your orthopedic insole will be designed to cushion the heel, help absorb shocks and distribute more weight while walking.

If you have a high arch, the shoes you choose are very important. Be sure to find shoes with good shock absorption. It is important that shoes that do not hurt the toes and have a stable heel. Shoes with sufficient space on the instep [the area under the tongue] are often best suited for feet with high arches. A pair of suitable running shoes is usually the best choice for all these qualities.
