Pilar is a 38-foot modified Playmate made by Wheeler. In 1934, Hemingway commissioned the ship and received the cargo in Miami. She installed twin engines, a live well and a special roller on the beam to help drag large fish [especially tuna and swordfish] onto the boat. The ship was later equipped with a flying bridge. The name Pilar comes from the Spanish Bullfighting Temple. Pilar is also the nickname of Hemingway's second wife. This yacht is the inspiration for the name Playa Pilar on Caya Guillermo in Cuba.
Hemingway uses Pilar for a variety of purposes. When he first captured the yacht in Miami, he cruised to Key West and lived on the boat for a while. Since 1935, he spent three summers near Bimini. When he was there, he discovered a technique to prevent shark attacks and dismembered catches. This method involves continuously retrieving his catch and Thompson machine gun!
Hemingway has spent a considerable amount of time...
