Cochlear implants - the hopes of millions of people "sound"

What is a cochlear implant?

A cochlear implant is an electronic medical device that replaces the function of the damaged inner ear [cochlea]. The cochlear coil bypasses the damaged cochlear hair cells and provides an acoustic signal to the brain.

The implant includes an outer portion located behind the ear and a second portion that is surgically placed under the skin.

Implants include:

  • A microphone that picks up sound from the environment.

  • A voice processor for selecting and arranging the sound picked up by the microphone.

  • The transmitter and receiver/stimulator receive the signal from the speech processor and convert it into an electrical pulse.

  • An array of electrodes, which is a set of electrodes that collect pulses from the stimulator and send them to different regions of the auditory nerve.

Who can implant a cochlear implant?

Children and adults with deaf or severe hearing impairment can be candidates for implants. According to the US Food and Drug Administration [FDA], more than 324,200 people have been implanted worldwide.

If you need an implant:

  • Moderate to severe hearing loss in both ears

  • Little or no benefit from hearing aids

  • Hearing professionals score 50% or less on the sentence recognition test when implanting the ear

  • Hearing professionals perform a sentence recognition test score of 60% or less in a non-implantable ear or binaural hearing aid.

Cochlear implant procedure

Surgery for cochlear implants begins with careful evaluation by otolaryngologists, anesthesiologists, audiologists, and doctors. Make a small incision behind the ear and the surgeon implants the receiver. The receiver is then connected to an electrode that is surgically inserted into the cochlea. Surgery usually takes 1-2 hours to complete.

Benefits of cochlear implants

  • You have more confidence in different social situations.

  • You speak at normal hearing level

  • You communicate better

  • You start to enjoy the world of new sounds

Want to implant a cochlear implant? This is what you need to know...

In 2014, the United Nations Development Index ranked Nigeria as 152 in 187 countries for health care services due to gaps in infrastructure and health care facilities, including a low percentage of doctors and a lack of internationally recognized certification in the country.

In addition to tourists from neighbouring countries such as Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan, there are about 1.27 million people visiting India for treatment from countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada. Not long ago, in 2012, about 40% of Indian visas from Nigeria were used for different medical treatments.

Why medical tourism?

  1. Cost-effective world-class medical facilities, hospitals and specialized medical centers, without waiting.

  2. Excellent medical quality, accredited medical facilities, skilled doctors and paramedical professionals.

  3. Offers affordable accommodation options.

  4. Convenient transportation.

  5. Other treatment options are available, such as Ayurveda, yoga and natural remedies.
