Book Review - Susan Vickers' Fireside

Kimberly Van Dorn is a mess. She is a flight instructor, dressed in a sequined evening gown, wearing four-inch strapless heels and only one "little suitcase" Judith Leiber handbag. Where did she go, what did she run? We know this, she just left the eternal sunshine of Los Angeles in the cold winters of Willow Lake in northern New York.

As a media agent for superstar sports figures, Kimberly has already traded in her work because she believes it will be the rhythm of her mother's embrace and the life of a small town. But the town doesn't mean a small problem, because the story is full of weird characters with problems. In particular, Bo Crutcher, a minor league baseball player with a big league dream. On the cliff to achieve his lifelong goals, he and AJ have never established a relationship with his son. The situation is very bad, AJ must deal with what he thinks is abandoning his father.

The fireside is about dreams and a second chance. The authors created vivid characters, jumping out of the page, each with their own background story and luggage. When people meet, the relationship they form helps to get rid of the shadows of the past and create hope for the future.

Susan Vickers has become my favorite. Her ability to include readers in stories and characters has fascinated me. You care what happens. I found myself waiting to return to the book between work and errands.

My only sophistry is that I finally feel in a hurry. She spent a lot of time developing characters and revealing their stories, so I was surprised when she finished everything on the last few pages. I think this resolution should take more time. However, I highly recommend this story - it will catch you.
