Bagombo Snuff Box is a collection of short stories written by Kurt Vonnegut. These are the stories printed in magazines in the 1950s. If the book is an album, it will be a collection of B faces. These stories are not exactly the same as Vonnegut's other works, although any fan will appreciate them. There are some gems, but in general, this collection is average in terms of short story writing. Vonnegut wrote this at the beginning of his career and his writing will only get better.
This book is best for fanatic Kurt Vonnegut fans. A fan wants to collect Vonnegut's work in its entirety, and this book does just that. It provides a rare glimpse of the author's first release of material. Fans can see his unique style and the origin of humor.
"Thanasphere" seems to be the reader's favorite, and it is easy to understand why. It shows the unique sound of Vonnegut. This story is also very interesting and sad. I also like this recurring character very much, the band director Helmholtz, his dedication to the students and his wild dreams are very interesting, sometimes very sad.
As an avid fan of Vonnegut, I don't like these short story collections. I can see that a new Vonnegut reader is somewhat disappointed with this series. Honestly, if you have never read Vonnegut before, it is best to start with another novel or other collection of short stories "Welcome to the Monkey House."
After completing the Bogombo Snuff Box, I want to re-read my favorite Vonnegut novel! For fans, this book provides a glimpse of a prolific and brilliant writing career. After reading begins, I want to continue the work below.
To be honest, this book makes me feel a little sad sometimes. As I said, I find that many of these short stories are both interesting and witty, but they are also very sad. Really, not frustrating, but a little melancholy. Vonnegut has a gift that allows the reader to truly sympathize with his role.
Kurt Vonnegut is one of the most influential American writers of the 20th century. He wrote fourteen novels [most famous, five in the slaughterhouse] and many short stories and essays. He is known for his mix of satire, dark humor and science fiction.
I recommend this book to Vonnegut fans as a way to complete his portfolio. New fans may want to start somewhere else, or at least realize that his other work is of a higher standard.
This book was soon read. There are nearly 300 pages [including 11 pages of introductions], and there are 23 short stories, so they are not particularly long. The style is easy to read, so you will fly over them. Although they may not be the best work of Vonnegut, it is still the true Vonnegut style, so you will have fun from this book anyway. It is definitely worth reading!
