What is a very low calorie diet (VLCD)?

There are hundreds of different weight loss and diet plans out there, and while most may show some signs of weight loss, that doesn't mean all of these are good plans. Many diet plans are not based on good science, but on unconfirmed ideas, sometimes even causing metabolic breakdown and loss of moisture, but nothing else. Therefore, it is important for people to understand the effectiveness of diet and why they should avoid a temporary diet plan that is almost always considered a fashion. In fact, the very low calorie diet [VLCD] is the most common fashion diet you often encounter, and these are almost always bad ideas.

The technical definition of a low-calorie diet may vary depending on the source you see. I have seen three different numbers being eliminated, those that are 800 calories, 1,000 calories and 1200 calories. The most common level seems to be drawn on a 1000 calorie line, but there are others at one of the other levels. Basically, although there is controversy about the "starvation line" of the daily minimum calorie, VLCD is a diet and weight loss program that is lower than this amount.

The problem is that your body begins to store fat, lose moisture and even burn muscle. In the long run, this will hurt healthy weight loss and even reduce excess weight in the short term. Most importantly, the dieters of this type of program will be very hungry, so they can almost guarantee that they will either fall off the carriage or have an eating disorder. Both are bad for overall health and healthy weight loss.

Seeing the "very low calorie diet" label in your diet plan can help you get to know it early, which is probably not a good diet plan, you should look at other options. This can be a clear giveaway, and it's always a good idea to know where you are before you try this plan. If you can avoid all VLCD diet plans to get a more reasonable and sustainable diet and weight loss plan, then this is almost certainly a good idea.

In the long run, there is no benefit to losing 5 pounds of water, which is why choosing a long-term and sustainable plan is a better clue.
