Creativity can be defined as problem identification and creative generation, while innovation can be defined as choice of ideas, development and commercialization.
There are other useful definitions in this area. For example, creativity can be defined as the composition of many ideas, some different ideas and some novel ideas.
There are different processes that can enhance problem identification and creativity. Similarly, different processes can enhance thinking choice, development, and commercialization. While there are no established commercially successful firefighting pathways, these processes increase the likelihood of generating and selecting good ideas and do not waste investment in developing and commercializing these ideas.
Type of innovation
Tidd et al. [2005] argue that there are four types of innovation; therefore, innovators have four ways to investigate when looking for good ideas:
a] Product innovation - new products or improvements to the product. New Mini or newer VX Beetle, new mobile phones, etc.
b] Process Innovation - Improve some parts of the process to generate revenue. Timely is a good example.
c] Positioning innovation - Lucozade used to be a medicinal drink, but it was repositioned as a sports drink.
d] Paradigm innovation - A major shift in thinking leads to change. During the expensive mainframe period, Bill Gates and others were aiming to provide home computers for everyone.
