As an overview of goal setting, this article will guide you through the process of reviewing your vision statement to formalizing and locking down meaningful and actionable goals.
Vision, the difference between goals and plans
Vision, goals and plans are important tools to use together. However, each purpose has a different purpose and can help you get to your destination from an efficient and effective place. Unfortunately, most people skip the visual steps altogether and are eager to implement the target steps, so they are set to fail during the planning phase. A good analogy is travel.
- The vision captures your main decisions about your travel destination. It's frame, but didn't answer the details of the trip.
- The target captures key decisions related to the trip. When do you leave and return? Can you fly or drive? What activities do you want to do?
- The plan captures detailed information so you can complete the journey and meet the goals you set for your trip. What is your flight itinerary? What is your budget? Which hotels do you live in? When did you conduct your chosen activity on the go?
It is important to note that once identified, you should stick to your vision, slowly change your goals, and then maintain a flexible plan to achieve your goals. This is called fixed in "what" but flexible "how".
First review your vision statement
Do you have a vision of your life? If not, then you should take the time to do so. If you already have a vision statement, it's time to look at the overall vision statement in your life, and the relevant vision statements for each area of your life, and ask yourself the following questions before you start setting specific goals. And make changes if necessary:
- It is inspiring, can you emotionally achieve it?
- Is this really important to you?
- It's stretching, but can you still see yourself implementing it?
- Is this really your own vision and not someone else [parents, bosses, etc.]?
- Is it positive and sustainable?
Now that you have set some compelling and clear vision statements for your life, the next step is to create great goals. The target statement consists of four parts:
- Objective statements show goals in a specific and positive way [usually very similar to the Vision statement; "I will be independent and wealthy"].
- A statement of action stating when you are aware of it ["When I have $5 million in net assets, I will achieve this."].
- The important statement explains why it is important to achieve this goal ["This is important because I want to focus on working with non-profit organizations to help them complete their mission while enjoying a round-the-world trip."].
- A time statement for voting when you want to implement it. ["In view of where I am, I will achieve this goal within ten years"].
Please note that the goal of your goal does not have to match the visual statement you created to 1:1. The reason is that sometimes a vision requires multiple goals to achieve it, and sometimes a goal can lead you to multiple visions.
Select one or more Vision statements to write three target statements for it
Someone once asked the difference between dreams and goals. Answer: The dream dies at dawn. As you can hear, it's not enough to just understand what you want [vision], and you need detailed goals and plans to make it a reality. Follow the step-by-step process described below and provide it in our My Goals tool on Percess, which takes a few minutes a day and you will gradually build detailed, compelling and achievable goals, just like you might in your life. So, after you reflect on your vision statement, choose up to three visions or wishes to make a goal statement [and an extreme goal]. Why are there only three? Why not more?
- First of all, our time and resources are limited. Although we can do something to make time, our chances of success will decline as the number of goals we actively work at any given time increases. The reason is that as the number of targets increases, it becomes more distracting, overwhelmed or discouraged. To be clear, each of the goals you face may have multiple smaller parts. However, try to stick to only three at any given time.
- Second, in any given case, only a few things are really important, and after completing other things [new jobs after completing the required training], some potential goals will be better.
- Third, it forces us to focus on real big goals rather than being distracted by small goals.
- Fourth, by focusing on fewer goals, we are more likely to achieve significant progress that we believe is faster. This also helps to maintain our momentum.
After selecting the Vision statement to use, create three more recent Objective statements as the basis for the target. Read them again to reflect your personal life area and overall vision statement. Are you really excited to turn these three goals into reality in your life? Once you reflect and improve as needed, you can flush these objective statements to the full goal.
Turn your goal statement into a goal
Now, for each, write down the metrics, importance, and time statements associated with the target below the target statement. An example is shown below [view structure, not what is or may not be relevant to you]:
vision : I want to be healthy and enjoy my favorite activities.
aims
purpose : Significantly improve my endurance and energy levels.
Measures:
- The adjustment is completed 10K without stopping.
- Energy stays up late at 11 o'clock and is not tired.
- I often want to work in the garden.
timing:
- I will start a practice routine on xx / xx / xxxx
- I will run 10K on yy / yy / yyyy
- I will have the energy needed for zz / zz / zzzz
After doing this for each target, check to see if they are SMART [stretched, measurable, achievable, relevant, and timed].
- small If you don't stretch your achievements relative to the past in some way, it's hard to have an inspiring goal.
- Medium It's important to understand, because it not only gives you a baseline to measure yourself, but it also helps you gain insight into part of the plan built to achieve this goal.
- One Chievable is obviously important, but by being achievable, we mean it may be achievable. How to achieve it will not be set during the planning phase. Use this feature for a quick check.
- [R Elegance is a check that ensures that this goal is relevant to your vision and priorities.
- Ť Imed is meant to give you a sense of urgency and a date where you want to enjoy the benefits of hitting the target. Note that there may be some changes in time as you complete the planning phase and determine the steps required to achieve your goals.
Once you have reviewed the goals and made any changes you want, you should put them on hold for a few days, then return and optimize as needed. This is to make sure they are really yours and what you want to focus on. Make sure you spend enough time on the importance statement as it will help ensure that you have a clear motivation to achieve your goals and help provide you with a view of whether you really capture the goal in the way you want.
Expand target details
In this step, we will add additional details to your goal to help guide your planning.
For each goal, ask yourself: To achieve this, I need to:
- Overcome these challenges
- Take advantage of these advantages
- Get these knowledge/skills
- Working with these people/organizations
It's important to note that you probably don't have all the answers to the above questions. The focus is on starting to think about what the goal will be, so that you can think better about breaking it down into manageable parts. Think of this as the first level. As you move forward and make plans, you will have more opportunities to further refine it. Once you have made it for the first time, set it aside today. If you have any help, read it again tomorrow.
Regarding overcoming challenges, these may be shortcomings such as lack of resources, time, and relationships. These are the issues you want to solve as you move forward.
These are yours in terms of taking advantage of certain advantages. They can be tangible in terms of financial resources, etc., and are emotional in terms of desire, dedication, energy, and so on. Egypt is functional in terms of skills, habits or relationships.
