Review - all you can eat: How hungry is the US?

Everything you can eat: How hungry is the United States? , Joel Berg, 2008, ISBN 9781583228548

This book looks at the current state of hunger in the United States. Written by anti-hunger activists and former government officials, this is not a beautiful photo.

If food insecurity [the new "hunger" euphemism] is a huge problem, why are there so many obese African Americans? Doesn't it show that they have enough food? What it really shows is that the food insecurity is bad, but not completely desperate, and has to rely on cheap, high-calorie foods that are full of chemicals and preservatives.

Why do inner city residents not buy more vegetables or even organic vegetables? Most downtown communities do not have supermarkets, so people have to rely on convenience stores that offer cheaper pre-processed foods instead of organic vegetables. In addition, if you are given a certain amount of money and must continue for a full week, vegetables are rare, and expensive organic vegetables are simply not possible. Find out what your state has to do with the food stamp recipients every week and see if you can do this.

Another problem for downtown residents is that various government programs are managed by different agencies that are now close to each other. It takes a vacation or looking for child care and takes a number of buses to experience several different bureaucratic nonsenses.

Everyone knows that someone said they have seen a food stamp recipient buying lobster or caviar or other very expensive food stamps. This is very unpopular because ordinary downtown recipients cannot access these items and the benefits are distributed on regular debit cards to reduce stigma.

What should I do? Among other things, the authors advocate integrating all hunger programs into one huge program. He also advocates a free school breakfast for all children, reducing the stigma of children and providing more healthy food in the city centre.

This book is an eye-opener. It is full of practical solutions and is very easy to read [even with charts and charts]. Very strongly recommended.
