Lauren Chatman wrote a delightful new book from
Mom's Big Book Baking: 200 simple, foolproof family collections for BirthdayParties, Bake Sales, etc. from
Like many moms, I have a very busy schedule and it's completely true here. The kitchen is really not a safe or friendly place for me. However, I found that Lauren Chattman's baking recipes are really simple and can even be made.
The book is divided into seven sections: Beyond Freezer: Homemade Pancakes and Waffles; Mom's Cafe: Muffins, Quick Bread, Biscuits and Scones; Cookie Jars: Vintage Cookie Mom's Way; Easy-Bake Oven: Keep it simple with brownies and bards; mom's apple pie: no failed pies, tarts, quiche and cobbler; birthday and other: cakes for all occasions; and yeast is your friend: basic bread and Pizza.
I like cakes - I can't extricate myself. But I don't like any kind of cake. It must be a yellow cake. So I think I will try to make a classic yellow cake [or cupcake] from the birthday and beyond chapters. I chose to make a cake instead of a cake because I think my cake pot is more comfortable than my cake tray. The recipe is simple, I can't believe my luck. If there is no frost, no cake will go to the party, so I use the vanilla birthday cake icing to decorate the freshly baked food. I only like parties! My friends can't believe my new talent.
I was very confident about the dessert category, so I decided to let my son add some spiced apple and raisin turnover to the mother's apple pie chapter. The sweet pie dough recipe is easy to prepare and fill. Mistakes When baking, my kitchen smelled sacred. The mistake is the goalkeeper.
A few weeks ago I invited my best friend [and her waffle maker] to a Sunday breakfast, so we can try the waffle recipe in the book "Beyond the Freezer". After a deep clarification, we chose gingerbread waffles. I think I may have a new career here, and my new friend list is growing steadily.
I plan to do more baking in the next few weeks. Try on my list are pan pizza dough, delicious cornbread, oatmeal cookies and ready-to-eat homemade microwave protein brownies.
I appreciate the time-saving tips and tricks provided in each chapter, as well as information on mail order and online resources. My only complaint about this book is that it doesn't contain color photos of recipes - this is a feature I really appreciate because I am a real newbie in the kitchen.
You can find this book in your local public library, but you may want to buy one for your collection.
