How to stop your teenager from driving after drinking

The legal drinking age in the United States is 21 years old. However, this does not mean that your child will not find alcohol before that age. In fact, most teenagers have already tried one or two drinks when they were 17 years old. This means that your child may drive after a few drinks, or may drive with a driver.

This is a terrible idea, but if you ensure that your teens are educated about the risk of drunk driving, then this idea does not have to be over. Here are some ways to prevent your teenager from driving after drinking any alcohol.

Simple things tell your teens

1. Exist for your child. This may seem simple. You might think that your child will come to you with anything, but most teenagers won't pick up the phone and call mom or dad when they need to go home. why?

Many teenagers feel embarrassed when they call their parents after drinking [the children don't want to have trouble!]. Talk to your child and tell him or her that you are there. Instructions can call mom or dad to go home - whenever you go home.

2. Explain to your child that you know your child is drinking. Be sure to explain that there is no reason to get on the bus for people who are drunk driving or drinking. If your child knows that you do not tolerate drinking, they may not drink or drive.

3. Provide another mode of transportation. If they end in difficult circumstances, they can give the child an extra taxi or Uber to take away the need to drive [or temptation].

4. Do not drink and drive. Children learn from their parents, so if you never drink and drive, your child won't - even if it's just a glass of wine or a cocktail at dinner.

5. Education. Tell your child what happens when driving after drinking. Show them photos, explain the consequences, and let them read the news clips. The more your child understands the dangers of drunk driving, the less likely they are to drink and drive.

6. Make sure there is no alcohol available in your home. Lock up any alcohol in your home and try not to let your child see you drinking at home. If your child can see or have access to alcohol, then drinking may become normal and normal – they won't think twice after drinking a few drinks.

This is your job

As a parent, making sure your child is always safe is your job. This includes educating your children and making sure they don't drive after drinking for any reason!
