I don't think I can say or write enough great things in Manning Park in British Columbia and all the ideas, hiking trails and the opportunities it offers. Manning Park is one of the destinations worth reviewing, viewing and exploring year after year.
This led to another big walk in the park, along the same path as Frost Mountain, but did not reach the same ending.
The larch plateau is a spectacular sight for hiking and ornamental alpine larch forests.
This kind of hiking is best done in September or October, when the larch turns into a gorgeous golden yellow. It can also be done in one day, but I highly recommend staying overnight on the Frosty Mountain Wilderness Campground in the mountains. If you have time, this will only make hiking more enjoyable and leisurely. The total itinerary for this trekking is approximately 18 kilometers.
Start hiking from the daytime use area of Lightning Lake near the far east end of the lake. The starting point of the trail is composed of a fairly steep narrow turn from the first few kilometers. When you are hiking, you will notice that the grass begins and shortly before you reach the first point where the lightning and lightning lake views are clearly visible. The surrounding mountains offer an enchanting view worth stopping to admire.
Along the trail, you will see rich wildflowers, including red col, yellow arnica and beautiful blue lupines. This path seems to be cut off in the middle of the subalpine meadow.
As you walk through the Wilderness Campsite area with your old wooden house, you will pass through Frosty Creek and in a few minutes you will see another beautiful view. Here is the path you take to the left, not to the top of the Frosty Mountains. You will soon encounter an 8km long mark, and soon you will encounter the open plateau of alpine larch. It is home to the largest alpine larch and some of the oldest trees in southwestern BC, some of which have been around for more than 2,000 years.
Observing alpine larch is best in late September or October, when they become beautiful gold.
Hiking on the Larch Plateau can be used as a day of hiking, but for a more laid-back and enjoyable hike, I highly recommend taking time out to camp at the Frosty Mountain Wilderness and spend more time exploring and admiring the landscape and larch.
This is a gorgeous trekking that does not involve reaching the highest peak, but does offer spectacular views and golden larchs that hike through Manning Park. Very worth the effort.
Happy hiking!
