Are you a new gardener? Or is it time to refresh the landscape you made many years ago? In either case, I highly recommend reading Nicola Ferguson's Right Plant, Right Place. It is the ultimate guide to low maintenance gardening.
Originally published in the early 1980s, this book quickly became a classic. It was extensively updated in 2005 and is now subtitled "More than 1,400 plants in every situation in the garden". The biggest feature of this book is that plants are organized according to several criteria:
Growth conditions from
[acid soil, heavy clay, sunny dry soil, dry shade, etc.]
purpose from
[floor coverings, climbers, hedges, paving gap fillers, containers], and
appear from
[leaf color, fragrant flower, ornamental fruit, long flowering period, etc.].
This will save you a lot of time when planning your own garden. If you are looking for something that is dry and shadowy, you can go to the part of the book instead of looking at a bunch of plants and trying to find a plant that fits this situation [and hope you don't ignore a good candidate]. You can also save money by checking the suitability of the plant before purchasing.
These lists are very detailed. Even in the most difficult places, you will be able to find the perfect plant. Each plant description includes color photographs, size, flowering season, needs and care.
Matching plant needs to planting locations is at the heart of low maintenance gardening. When all plants grow under ideal conditions, they naturally thrive and therefore require less horticultural intervention.
Twenty years ago, this was my favorite gardening book, but I must admit that I was distracted by the advertisements in the latest essential plants or catalogues displayed by the nursery. My current plant has completely failed, or I need too much work and attention. It's time for me to update my garden and replace the high-maintenance beauty with the same lovely plants that are more adapted to the environment in my yard. I am very grateful to rediscover Right Plant, Right Place. If you are a newcomer to gardening, this comprehensive book is everything you need to get off to a good start.
