Book Review - Virago Book of Women Gardeners

' Virago Women's Gardener ' Edited by Deborah Kellaway.

This book is very happy to read. Deborah Kellaway brings together an excerpt of about a hundred female gardeners. She is a talented garden writer herself, and her obituary in the Guardian is well worth reading.

She began a short but academic study from the end of the 19th century to the modern garden writing study, especially during the war years, which portrayed the tide of ebb and flow.

Then she allowed the writer to speak for herself. She includes contributions from well-known authors such as Jekyll, Chatto, Pavord and Hobhouse. She also includes the work of others, not so well known, they drafted the same when designing and building their precious gardens, and spent time eloquently writing down their observations and experiences.

These works have given them a comforting old-fashioned feeling. They brought us back to an era in which times seemed to pass at a more pristine pace. These words are not printed on the processor, but are written with the exquisiteness that only a pen can bring.

There are no bullet points or irony wit, which is characteristic of modern garden writing style. We have found a kind of poetic knowledge and wisdom, not a gimmick, to give readers inspiration and encouragement.

This is a book that you can sneak into and always find interesting content. Reading their dedication and their passion, their success and heartbreaking failure will be enhanced by those who are ahead of us.

' Virago Women's Gardener ' edited by Deborah Kellaway, published by Virago Press. On Amazon, the second-hand illustration hardcover edition is priced at 1p for today, with a postage of £2.80 or a second-hand paperback for £1.34 postage or £6 for a new paperback.

For my American cousin, Amazon's second-hand paperback price today is $1 plus $4 shipping or $3 in new hardback but not sure about shipping.
