There are several attractive children's books on the market that either help parents explain death to their children or directly to children's reading pleasure, including an explanation of death. Surprisingly, few of them are specific Christian books. However, I can recommend three very attractive books.
1] Doris Stickney's water bugs and cockroaches from
Published by The Pilgrim Press in 1982. This is a very small book with a story that begins below the surface of a quiet pond in a small group of water bugs. At the end of the story, the otter turns into a cockroach and clearly illustrates the fact that cockroaches cannot return below the surface of the water, telling the water worm what it is doing, and what its new life in the body is like. . Then pray, and the child reader can use it as a guide when praying for someone he or she mourns. The book then gives parents some instructions on how they can tell a child about death and uses Matthew and Mark's citations to prove how Jesus approached the child. The book ends with the prayer of the parents. I think this is an ideal resource for parents who may be unsure and unsafe about how to deal with this issue.
2] Will I live forever? Carolyn Nystrom by Jo-Anne Shilliam from
Published by Lion Hudson in 2006. Tell the first person through the child's perspective that it directly asks the reader a question about sadness, terrible thoughts, and then links those issues to the child's world. This story outlines Christian understanding of the causes of our death, starting with the story of creation and Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. It continues to quote citations from the Gospels. It is also very honest and candid about the physical process of death - the corruption of the body, the reasons it must be cremation or burial, etc. It continues to reflect on heaven - once again answering the direct, logical question a child will ask for. This is a very good book, you want to use it when you are a child.
3] Meg Harper's Grandma Party from
Paul Nicholls said that in 2003 it was replaced by The Bible Reading Fellowship. This is a delightful book centered on the grandmother's funeral, which provides a practical way to help children become part of the sad process of their loved ones. It includes a story and creative craftsmanship to understand how children participate in preparing tea after a funeral; recipes; making calligraphic instructions for place cards; and how to make photo frames, recall books and paper water lilies. This book has a solid Christian foundation that explains the resurrection of the deceased and completes the prayers that can be read by the child at the funeral. This is a lovely and practical book that helps parents understand how to involve children at every stage so they can realize that death is part of life, not aliens, taboos and terrible facts, hidden in silent walls And mysterious rituals.
