Sailing in the North Dodecanese

In the summer, the promising wind is Meltemi from N-NW. From June to October, it can reach level 7. Winds from SE can be seen in spring and autumn, usually between 2 and 4. Summer temperatures can rise to 35 degrees Celsius. Winter is mild.

Since the prehistoric times, Dodecanese has been involved. They were first ruled by the Minos and the Ammonites. But their economic and intellectual development began with the arrival of the Dorians in 1100. As Hippocrates established a medical school there, Coase flourished in the 4th and 3rd centuries BC. The Romans occupied these islands in 146 BC, followed by the Crusades during the long-term Byzantine period. In 1309, the Knights of St. John became rulers of Rhodes and then extended their sovereignty to other islands. In 1522, these islands fell into the Turks and were defeated by the Italians in 1912. The Dodecanese Islands joined forces with Greece in 1948.

Patmos is located in the northern part of the Dodecanese Islands. Skala Patmos is a natural harbour on the east side of the island. Be careful when approaching Skala because there are several coral reefs. When Meltemi blows up, this method is greatly advantageous by the surrounding highlands. The yacht can be smashed or severe to the dock. The bottom is sand and weeds, and it stays good. Meltemi has a reasonable haven, but the strong SE wind makes the port unsustainable. There is water on the dock to provide fuel. Most of the rules are available at Skala and there are good seaside taverns.

It is worthwhile to visit St. John's Abbey, but wear appropriate clothing. Other Patmos anchors include: Ormos Meloyi, Ormos Livadhi, Ormos Kambos, Ormos Stavros and Ormos Grikou.

Arki is 6 miles from the NE in Patmos. The yacht can be moored at Port Augusta. The bottom is well kept in mud and weeds, and the housing is good. The only facility is a few taverns on the waterfront.

Nisos Lipso is 2 miles from Arki Mountain. There is a small port in the village of Lipso. The yacht can be bent over to the W-side pier or the stern. Alternate anchor in the bay. The bottom is sand, dirt and weeds, which are not good. The terminal provides water and fuel. Most of the regulations are available in the village and there are several good taverns on the waterfront that serve fresh fish. This village is very attractive and has not been affected by the tourism industry. There are several bays on the South Coast that can be moored.

Nisis Gaidharos is the northernmost part of the Dodecanese Islands, just 8 miles from the Turkish coast. Ay Yeoryiou is located to the south of Gaidharos. The yacht can be in the north or the stern of the ferry terminal. When I took refuge from Meltemi, it was good, but the strong southerly wind made the port unsustainable. There are limited regulations and there are 3 taverns.

Leros is located in the north of Kalimnos. There are springs on the island, and some of Leros are wooded and tree-lined. Lakki is located on the island of SW. The yacht can be hovered or stern on the pier and then choose a mooring rope to lay. Each berth has water and electricity. Most of the regulations are available and there are taverns nearby.

Ormos Parhteni is a large bay on the coast of Leros. The yacht can be moored at the eastern end of the bay. The southern coast is a military facility that prohibits yachts, as does photography in any part of the bay.

Ormos Alindas is a deep bay on the east coast. In the absence of a northerly yacht, you can bow to the Mole or the stern. Alternately moored on the west side of the dock. There is water near the pier and there is fuel in the village. Most of the regulations are available and there are some taverns on the waterfront.

Pandeli is located in the south of Ormos Alindas. The yacht can be bent or stern to the outside of the mole or anchored on the beach. Grab the bottom of the sand and weeds. There is water on the dock to provide fuel. Some regulations are available, but Platanos offers a better shopping experience within a 15-minute walk from the hotel. This environment is the most attractive, the village is full of bougainvillea, oleander and t willow.

Kalimnos is located south of Leros. Although there are some green valleys, it is mainly a barren island.

Pothia is the capital and the center of the Greek sponge fishing industry. Although most sponges are now from the North African coast. The yacht can be at the ferry terminal SW only N's bow or stern. The bottom of the mud and weeds and keeps only mild. Meltemi has a good shelter. There is water on the dock to provide fuel. All terms are available and there are many taverns to choose from.

Vathi is located on the eastern side of Kalimnos. The yacht can bend over to the pier or pier. The bottom is sand and weeds that provide good retention. There is water on the dock and a limited supply is available in the small village. The inland valley is very charming, with orange and lemon groves.

Pserimos is a small island, just in the E of Kalimnos. The village of Pserimos is located on the SW side. The yacht should be anchored in a convenient place. What a beautiful beach has a tavern. This is connected to a boat from the surrounding islands, which is packed in the summer.
