David Brown created an epic 19th-century fantasy history story.
Rex Knight is the protagonist. From the mysterious earth of Rex to his first few years in Eldon, the occupants and their lives. The name of their planet, he strives to survive, thrive, and ultimately succeed in a great way. Most of the stories are related to Rex's point of view.
There are other races and people who are transporting. Wapiti spoke a lingua franca, mainly English, German and some indigenous people, Clovis, his own language. This may support other means of transport and some indigenous groups, but there is also a foreign non-human race called Ichneumons that rules an essential part of the continent and looks like the 19th century North and South America.
The details of this planet, civilization and government are cast aside in the development of this story. Ichneumons is competing with the mighty Prussian Empire for control of the world. The area roughly in line with the eastern United States is controlled by the Prussian Empire. Reminders are strictly controlled by Ichnemons. These two empires have been fighting for control of the continent. At the same time, the continents of Europe and Asia are divided between the Prussians and their allies and the Mongolian tribes, and they will remain uneasy if they do not openly attack the eastern border of Prussia.
Historically, Ichnemons has conquered and destroyed most of the indigenous people. Wapti and Clovis avoided this fate by aligning with the Prussians. That and the rugged wilderness of the terrain in their area made Ichneumons ' Emperor, Rakakonda and his troops. Since most of the connections were made through disputes and other forms of war, there was no loss of love between the two groups. The third largest power group here is a slave owner who usually owns large cotton plantations and maintains slave labor.
The Prussians were entering a period of abolitionism, and many established institutions were frustrated, but especially the slave trade had been discouraged and then banned by the empire. This created another group to control their own destiny. These planters hope to maintain the status quo of slavery and fear that they will go bankrupt due to any changes.
These plots and conspiracy are sure to rival any power on Earth in the 19th century. All of this contributes to the narrator's complexity and different perspectives. It is also a very intense and complicated plot.
The format is a chapter, divided into perspective changes between several narrators.
There are too many characters described here, but the most prominent is Rex Knight and his partner Amy Caroom. Amy was wanted by her own father, Purnell, regardless of death or alive. From this humble beginning, there are many different characters. Most people are not worth mentioning because they pass in and out narratives, but they come in, develop enough to be convincing, and then proceed from the perspective of a particular narrator.
One of the main difficulties is the inclusion of foreign races in the main players of all wars, political conspiracy and even the resentment between slave owners and the Prussian Empire that controls their region.
The plot is woven into and out of focus. The character moves and leaves on the stage. The leaders of these groups are busy making the plot more powerful while dealing with political and practical issues.
Science and biology will love this book for the historical adaptation of enthusiasts and cultures that replace reality, and it's easy to stay interested. Since this is the first of a series of books that are relatively prolific writers of Brown, everyone expects more from this fertile mind.
5 stars.
