Padstow sits happily on the west side of the camel estuary on the north coast of Cornwall; the bed and breakfast is the perfect place to visit the entire county. There is nowhere to go; even Lands End and St Ives are just over an hour's drive - in the summer months, traffic can be very heavy. Both Tralmouth and Truro are worth a visit and are easily accessible. Port Isaac is also home to the TV series Doc Marten. The Eden Project is very close to the Lost Garden in Heiligen and is very popular.
Padstow can provide something for everyone, whether you are young or old, or can't decide, your interest is sailing, water skiing or windsurfing, golf or walking, or fishing, or maybe just sitting on the dockside People - watching. May 1st is the day when Padstow is self-contained: the locals wear white dresses from head to toe and dance through the town to celebrate the summer. Padstow is decorated with green leaves, and "Obby Oss" walks through narrow streets with its entourage.
Many bed and breakfast rooms in Padstow are booked every year, especially on May Day, which coincides with bank holiday times. However, when May Day falls on weekdays, the town [just a little!] is quieter and it is possible to find a room, even a quiet pint is still impossible. If you find a room by the dock, you can safely watch the world for the past few hours, including sailing in the bay, and the crew of the water athletes and fishing boats unload the catch.
The camel estuary is located in a terrible sandbank, quite suitable for the Doom Bar. This has taken the lives of many sailors and their ships, and is full of wreckage. There are many "destructive" stories in the west, where the saboteurs use lanterns to lure boats onto the rocks and then plunder the cargo.
Most of these are now forged, although anything that has been washed ashore is considered a gift from God, especially during difficult times, and many poor Cornish people built or repaired their cottages with wrecked timber. There are private car parks at several bed and breakfast hotels along the harbour, but there is a large car park at the South Pier and another adjacent to it, which used to be a station car park. In summer, the park and rides are complete, starting with a large venue near the supermarket in the suburbs of the town.
