Pilates is a fitness system developed by German-born gymnast Joseph Pilates in Germany in the early 20th century. The gymnast is partly Greek. He designed a sports system during the First World War to improve the rehabilitation program for decommissioned veterans. He introduced a mechanism of exercise in which mental and physical health are interrelated. He proposed some specific actions to help the injured soldiers recover by stretching, strengthening and stabilizing the main muscles.

Pilates calls this method Contrology, which is based on the use of the mind to control muscles. The program always focuses on posture muscles, which is essential for maintaining body balance and supporting the spine.
