How parents can help ease the pressure to enter college

For most high school students, entering college is a stressful experience. However, parents can take steps to relieve stress and make the experience more positive. First, when discussing university choices, parents should make "you" not "we", giving students a sense of empowerment or independence in the choice and application process of the university.

Parents should not fill out an application with a counselor or admissions officer, call the school or arrange an appointment for the child. High school students are fully capable of completing the work required to "enter" the university. Parents should be open to schools where their children are inclined, rather than falling into the trap of "only one school" as the ultimate reward and reward. Always remember that the focus is on enjoying the learning experience rather than winning. There are more than 3,500 universities in the United States, and only 200 of them accept fewer applicants.

Pushing a child to a famous school is not as important as focusing on a school that can provide a suitable match for successful learning and meaningful university experience. Encourage your child to study the school as early as possible and visit the university campus several times. Plan to accompany your child for these visits, but allow your child to explore and ask questions independently. Support and encourage your child to conduct mock interviews with other adults to prepare for university visits.

If possible, start the university planning process in the 9th grade so that your child can follow the "baby steps" instead of following a fast-paced schedule. Parents need to remind their children that there are many universities and many choices, and if students don't get into their preferred choices, then "no problem".
